Vogel will go down in Illinois high school history as one of the most overpowering softball pitchers ever. She was the most valuable player of the 1982 and 1984 state tournaments as the Lady Raiders were crowned state champions both years. The Lady Raiders also took third place in 1983. As a senior, Vogel was named to the 1984 Chicago Tribune All-State Team.
Her career statistics are unreal, especially when considering she often shared the pitching duties. She was undefeated in 55 career decisions and compiled an earned run average of 0.17, the lowest ever according to the IHSA record book. She threw 52 complete games, including 35 shutouts and three complete games. Her 16 shutouts in 1984 is the fourth best ever for a single season. Vogel walked just 37 batters and struck out 371. She was also a good hitter, finishing with a .328 career batting average.
Vogel’s greatness also showed on the basketball court, where she was a member of two Class A state championship teams in 1982-83 and 1983-84. She finished with 1,511 points and a 15-point average for her career. As a junior, she was a first team selection to The Quincy Herald-Whig all-area team and a second team selection to the all-state tournament team. As a senior, she was a first team all-state tournament pick and The Herald-Whig’s Player of the Year.
Vogel went on to play softball for four years at Illinois State.
