The 1978 girls volleyball team won 32 games and finished as state champions. Only three times during the entire season were the Lady Raiders pushed to a third game of a match.
In the state tournament, the Lady Raiders won all three matches in two straight games. They beat Providence New Lenox, Breese Mater Dei, and Tolono Unity to win the state title.
The team was headed up by Debbie Lawrence (Azotea) and Karen Heinze (Williams). They were chosen to the all-state tournament team. Other members of the 1978 volleyball team were: Terri Druffel (Bergman), Cathy Mast (Hollensteiner), Ann Strieker (Derrick), Connie Trine (Fielding), Nancy Damhorst (Capps), Janet Kenning (Flint), Pattie Deters, Diane Hughes (Kemner), Amy Miller (Looten), Donna Venvertloh (Goerlich), Barb Nutt (Conover), Sue Trine (Ostermiller), Statistician Kelle Schuckman (Fleming), and Manager Jim Bozarth. The coach was Bill Starkey.
In 1977, this Lady Raiders volleyball team finished second in the state with a record of 30-1. The 1978 team then capped off the year with the State title and finished with a two-year won-loss record of 62-1.
