Steve Havermale ’67

Year Inducted:

Anytime someone from Quincy Notre Dame called, Steve Havermale answered. He truly was one of the behind-the-scenes heroes, typically with a pair of pliers or a screwdriver in his hands.

Havermale, who was a 1967 graduate of Christian Brothers, volunteered as a ticket taker at QND home sporting events for more than 30 years, but he did so much more.

A career spent working in electronics, first at Gem Electronics and then as one of the founding partners of Alarm Systems Inc. — he later became the sole owner and president of the company — gave Havermale a knack for fixing things. At QND, that often meant he was asked to fix issues with the electronic scoreboards.

He was a member of the “Midnight Crew,” which helped develop and build the softball field and concession stand now known as “The Backyard.” He was an active band parent and mainstay at QND home events until passing away in 2018.

"On behalf of our Dad, Steve Havermale CB class of 1967, we are very appreciative of his induction in the Quincy Notre Dame Hall of Fame. Dad loved being a ticket taker, member of the Midnight Crew, concession worker, band parent, scoreboard repairer, working with the maintenance staff and being a general help to the QND athletic staff and QND community.

When asked to help or when a need was identified, Dad dropped what he was doing and answered that call for help at a moment's notice. Many times, just prior to game time for the scoreboard repairs! In his professional life and personal life away from QND, he was always there to help when needed for anyone that asked. His spirit of service to others never wavered nor was he ever too busy to lend a helping hand. He had that willing and happy servant attitude until his passing.

We know Dad would be proud, and maybe a little embarrassed, by the recognition and with his induction into the QND Hall of Fame. However, we as his children know how much the relationships, meeting the people attending the events, the lifelong friends and providing service to others meant to our Dad. He loved every minute of his time spent at QND. His service to QND was of great importance to him, and he is well deserving of this honor.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the QND Family and to the QND Hall of Fame selection committee. We know Dad is looking down with great pride, but is also trying to find a place to hide and avoid the attention. God Bless you Dad and Congratulations!"
